From the resourcefulness and pure joy of Satchel Paige to the courage of Jackie Robinson, through the pioneering efforts of Curt Flood and the exemplary quest of Hank Aaron, Black players have been role models, record-setters, social trail blazers and an integral part of baseball’s evolving storyline. The roster of historical influencers extends from Josh Gibson and Willie Mays through Rickey Henderson, Ken Griffey Jr. and Mookie Betts. In conjunction with Black History Month, the MLBPA will be posting a daily series of quotes and noteworthy moments -- on and off the field -- featuring some of the prominent figures who have helped shape the course of the sport for decades.
